歌詞やテーマは単純そうに見えて、逆に深くて難しい。

この曲とホビットのビルボ・バギンズを思い出すのは自分だけでしょうか？

ガンダルフが彼を訪ね冒険に誘っても、今の現状で満足だと言い張るビルボ。

予期せぬドワーフ達の来客にもはた迷惑な思いを隠し切れない。

彼らが去った後、安堵と共に拾い上げる冒険の契約書を見たとき、、、

彼の"Headlock"は解けたようです。

曲調はもちろん、ボーカルの声が、、卑怯すぎます。

そしてこのストレートな歌詞。曲調が相まって、決して気楽にこんな歌詞を歌っているわけではないんだということが伝わってきます。

お互いギリギリのところにいる。けど、きっとうまくいく、そうなるまでもがいて生きよう。そんな擦り切れた思いが伝わります。

自分はこの曲をずっと聞いて生きていくと思います。

とっても難しい訳でした。

「Never is a promise」を単純に訳せば「Neverというのは約束である」ということなのですが、つまり約束は破られるものである、という皮肉を込めているんですよね。

「絶対」などと言う事は、嘘をつくことと同じだという事。

理解できないことを理解している。理解しているなどというのは嘘。

「絶対」に起きるわけがないこと、恐らく彼女に対するチープな約束が破られたことを一生理解できるわけがない。「絶対」なんて矛盾している。理由などない。

何を信じればいいかわからない。

そして理解し合えることなどない、ということを理解しているため、これを伝えたところで口論になるだけ。そしてそんな彼女の姿が、戦いを諦めているように見える、、と。

このもどかしさ、何となくわかります。

理解しているとか、絶対とか口だけの軽さに辟易しているのでしょう。

今回はノルウェーはオーレスン出身の女性シンガーSigridの「Plot Twist」を翻訳してみました。非常に爽やかで北欧独特の雰囲気がただようポップソングです。

歌詞の内容は復縁を迫る元カレへの痛烈な皮肉で、曲調と合わさってダメ男へ「ざまーみろ！」と言わんばかりの痛快な反撃ソングとなっています。正に「Plow Twist」というような状況が浮かんできます。

Rihannaの「Take a Bow」やBeyonceの「Irreplaceable」のように海外の女性シンガーの恋愛ソングによくあるのですが、「あんたほんとダメ男だったわ」とけちょんけちょんに言ってのける強かさ、「もう他にもっといい男いるから、じゃあねー」という爽やかでポジティブな雰囲気の中に「あなたは特別だと思っていたのに」と思わせるような切ない言い回しがとっても上手く使ってあり、本当に大好物です。

邦楽女性アーティストでは切なく悲しげなバラードになりがちな恋愛ソングですが、「あたしに酷い仕打ちをしたあんたはクズ、あんたなんか比べ物にならないくらいいい男がいるし、今ほんと幸せ」みたいなとこはやはり海外の女性の強さの表れですかね。大好きです。

「Shots Fired!」というフレーズの訳が非常に難しかったです。この言い回しはそのまま「発砲された、火蓋が切られた」という意味と、「相手の侮辱に対してウィットに富んだ切り返しをすること」というスラングの意味が内包されています。
（恐らく酷かったと思われる）元カレの行為に対し「You've been showin' me that you're the best that I've ever had, or you're the best lie I've never heard.」というような皮肉が効いた上手い言い回しで反撃したことを「Shots fired!（あーあ言っちゃった！痛いとこ突かれちゃったね？喧嘩勃発ね！）」と言ってるわけです。

日本語だと一言でうまく表す表現が思いつかなかったので、ググってみたところ「会心の一撃」という訳があり、これがうまくハマると思ったので使用しました。

この曲全体がそのような元カレを皮肉ったりけちょんけちょんに言ってる内容ですね、痛快です。

★マー坊メモ

第２回は、こちらも自分が大好きな曲であるOasisの「Wonderwall」を翻訳してみました。

名曲だけに色々な解釈や訳があると思いますが、作詞作曲者である当の本人のノエルが当初は「恋人へ宛てた歌」と言っていたのを、破局後は「大事な友人についての歌」と対象が変わっていたり、「Backbeat」やタイトルの「Wonderwall」等の抽象的な表現もあったりして、一見分かりやすい歌詞の中でもかなり考えさせられる内容でした。

特に「And all the roads we have to walk are winding、And all the lights that lead us there are blinding」の部分は、分かりそうで分からない抽象的な部分で、敢えて個人的解釈を強く含めた訳にしてみました。

「Lights」をどう捉えるかで結構変わってくると思うのですが、自分は「栄光やトラブル等の人生で起こるであろう（起こった）様々な出来事」と捉えました。つまり「人生という道は曲がりくねっていて先が見えず困難であろう。しかも人間社会で起こりうる、様々なチャンスや栄光、もしくは逆に不安でネガティブな出来事という光が多すぎ（眩しすぎ）て更にその道を見えにくく不安定なものにしている」という事です。

タイトルである「Wonderwall」は逆に直球で「かけがえのない人」と訳しました。「Wonderwall」はギャラガー兄弟が敬愛するThe Beatlesのジョージ・ハリスンのアルバム名から拝借したことは明白ですが、結局は「大事なもの」「敬愛するもの」を示唆するのかなと思いました。

ノエルがこの曲を捧げる対象が変わったとしても、前述したように結局は大事な人の為に歌った曲であるということは変わらないと思いました。

歌詞翻訳第一弾として大好きなEd Sheeranの新曲を翻訳してみました。
「I guess I could just pretend The colours are more than blue」の部分の解釈が難しかったです。

「これ以上悲しいことは無いと思い込みたい」という解釈もありましたが、それだとそれに続く「But I lost more than my friend」に対し少し違和感がありました。
いろいろと調べたところ、エドは感情を色で捉えていて「Blue」は悲しみなどを表しているということや、「Blueは（亡くなった友人である）ジャマルの色なんだ」と言っていたのを踏まえ「悲しさよりもっと素晴らしい感情があるはずだ、ジャマル以上の人がいるはずだ（と思いたい）」というような解釈が一番しっくりきました。

ただし、別れた恋人についてであれば「〇〇以上の人」という表現もできますが、ジャマルはエドの親友であり、また彼らはどちらも既婚者で、エドには子供もいますのでその表現は少し違うかなと思いました。

よって「more than blue」＝「Blue（悲しみ）以外の素晴らしい感情や出来事」と捉えました。
